Support the ACLU: Stand Against Anti-Trans Bills & Advance LGBTQ Equality

efter ACLU Foundation (AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION FOUNDATION INC)

WHO WE ARE:
The ACLU works to ensure that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, & queer people belong everywhere and can live openly and authentically without discrimination, harassment, or violence. The ACLU has a long history of defending the LGBTQ community, including winning the right for same-sex couples to marry at the Supreme Court. Today, the ACLU brings more LGBTQ rights cases and advocacy initiatives than any other national organization.

Already in 2024, state legislatures across the country have introduced nearly 500 anti-LGBTQ bills. The ACLU is documenting this record number of bills and working with our nationwide network of affiliates to support LGBTQ people across the country. Bookmark our legislative tracker here: (https://www.aclu.org/legislative-attacks-on-lgbtq-rights-2024).

We continue to fight in courts across the country to ensure that LGBTQ people, and especially trans and nonbinary youth, can live freely – here is a snapshot of some of our work:

- Kentucky and Tennessee: In Doe v. Thornbury and L.W. v. Skrmetti, the ACLU and our partner organizations are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to block harmful laws banning gender-affirming care and potentially penalizing healthcare providers. We are waiting for the Court to decide whether they will hear one or both cases and will update this page once they decide.

- Ohio: We are challenging the unconstitutional enactment of House Bill 68, and specifically, a discriminatory provision in H.B. 68 that bans gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors.

- Texas: In March, the ACLU won a critical victory for transgender youth against the state’s attempts to target their families. Earlier in 2024, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott had issued a directive ordering the state's family policing agency to investigate the parents of trans youth – potentially even removing children from their parent's custody. We went to court to fight this directive and just won a crucial victory in both of our cases, Doe v. Abbott and PFLAG v. Abbott, successfully blocking the state's attempts to interfere with the families of transgender youth. Read more about the ruling here: (www.aclu.org/press-releases/152453).
