Support the ACLU: Protect the Right to Vote

, ACLU Foundation (AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION FOUNDATION INC)

Voting rights are under attack nationwide as nearly all states are attempting to pass laws that restrict access. The ACLU is currently litigating to protect voting rights in over a dozen states, from coast to coast, in every region of the country. We are the only civil rights organization committed to defending the voting rights of all Americans, with legislative and litigation capacity in all 50 states.
While fighting off attempts to restrict voting rights, the ACLU also is working to expand access wherever possible. Learn more about what the ACLU is doing to protect all eligible voters’ right to cast a ballot – and to have that ballot counted.

Here’s the latest (as of February 2022):
One Year Later, Our Democracy is Still in Crisis: Voter suppression is rearing its head at every turn. As we reflect on the first anniversary of the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, it’s easy to think of that day’s attack as an isolated incident — a singular outlandish, violent siege that threatened our democracy. Make no mistake: Voter suppression efforts and unequal representation were widespread before the Jan. 6 insurrection — here at the ACLU, we’ve long fought to protect and expand this hard-won right. But last year’s violent refusal by a vocal minority to accept the peaceful transfer of power to a legitimately-elected president seemed to embolden rather than deter voter suppressors.
In Georgia and South Carolina, we’ve filed lawsuits challenging the redistricting maps, which deny Black voters the opportunity to participate equally in our democracy. These restrictions and barriers are bald-faced attempts by lawmakers and officials to limit who is part of the democratic process, how they get to participate, and when their participation counts.

In addition, we recently won a critical victory in Ohio, where the state’s Supreme Court struck down Ohio’s gerrymandered state House and Senate district maps, ordering the Republican-controlled Redistricting Commission to draw a new map that complies with the Ohio Constitution. The ACLU filed a lawsuit challenging the maps in September, arguing that the maps violate the Ohio Constitution by giving an extreme and unfair advantage to the Republican Party.
As Jan. 6 illustrated, our democracy can’t be taken for granted — it must be protected and fortified, not just in our nation’s capital but in every state. We won't stop fighting until every eligible voter can cast their ballot.
